I was told to go out and get a shot of the fall, here ya go.

This guy was a blast, he makes bird houses, bee boxes and turtle teepees, he said he was interested in my socks and we talked etsy a bit.

Another reason I don't like Walmart, they wouldn't let me go in and follow these two characters buying gifts for veterans at a hospital. They were good sports and fun to get to know.

Climbed a couple of flights of stairs a scary ladder that went a little more than horizontal to cross a wet slick roof to get a shot that never ran.

Face vs Crowd

There is a constant discussion...fight...tug o' war about using face shots vs crowd shots. My opinion on the subject is that if the crowd is huge, unplanned for or in another way news worthy than run that one. If the crowd is the story but if what the crowd is doing is the story then run the faces, show what they are doing, why it is so important that it got coverage in the story.

A recent assignment had me at a local "blessing of the pets", there were probably 30-40 people with various animals at the local catholic church, nothing unexpected. I provided tight, medium and a wide crowd shot.

Sometimes I really like the photos of the people I get for the "man on the street". Some days I wish I could portraits but portraits they way I want to do them.

Realization

I've been looking at past post from early in my internship over 2 years ago and realizing how scared I was about taking people's pics. It's comforting to know that I now have no problem going up to someone and taking a pic of them eating food at the fair and then telling them that the story is about the high calories in the food they are eating, 2000 in the case of the bloomin' onion.

I have gotten over the fear of people not wanting their picture taken, most people are ok with it and excited that they might make it in the paper. Those who don't want their photo taken like this young man I don't really care because if you are headed to the courtroom you are fair game.

Victims can always be tricky shooting still, I never really know how they are going to react, this car dealer was swindled out of 30,000 dollars and was pissed. But in between the shots he was smiling and joking around. I really enjoyed the angry clouds.

And then there are the really random ones that turn out to be alot of fun. Barney Fife aka Scott Epperson was performing at the Bloomsburg Fair and he was a hoot. So much fun to watch interact with fans of all ages and talk with.

This woman was carried out of her burning apartment by the two police officers behind her, she was flirting with every guy in the room, reporter, videographer, and the two cops.

Local bean soup festival, the soup is a original from the civil war, didn't look, smell or taste good but people have been coming back for 118 years to get it.

The man in the corner was a former owner of a local theater in the 70s and stoped to see a mural that was done on the building next to where the theater burned down years ago. It was pretty emotional for him.

Last Sunday there was a tour of churches in the area it was actually pretty interesting seeing the history of the places. The day would have been much more enjoyable if the rain that was threatening would have arrived and help eliminate the humidity.

Tiffany found out it is a dangerous position to have two friends that work for the newspaper. She is the press secretary for a senatorial campaign in Utah and has been running it from her home in Riverside, PA. I visited her the day before she headed to Utah for the primaries with her kids who are 4 and a year and a half. Her husband is a resident at the hospital (he was hiding in the kitchen).

To raise money for the children's hospital in the area... there was a miscommunication and I showed up when the reporter was supposed to, in time to talk to locals after the beginner race, and he showed up when I should have, before the start of the beginner race so that I could get photos of local families riding together. Everyone ended sparatically over the next couple hours.

It was a great time she was very patient with my questions and thankful that I was truely interested. Operating Room's new table

Gina and I went to one of the hospitals in the area for a story about the new OR table that is used for an anterior approach to a hip replacement, where surgeons enter the body through the front. This procedure uses a smaller incision, is less traumatic to tissue, offers a faster recovery and experiences less pain. Very exciting let me tell you, and no there was no surgery going on.

The local Boy Scout Troop was getting ready for the Klondike derby last night and the assistant scout master just happens to work in advertising so what do you know I get to go cover them lashing the sleds together. The race is Saturday and sadly Rob gets to cover it, sorry Rob.

A day on the Street

Today was a walk randomly up to people day. First I was asked to get pics of people smoking not many in this world I think would agree to that especially for the paper. This guy was nice and I actually like how it turned out he spends most of his day hanging out infront of his place with friends watching the world go by. Those friends are the ones who convinced him to let me take his pic so I owe them a huge THANKS.

Next I was sent up to a neighboring town to take pics of people feeding the meter because the town isn't going to bag the meters for the holidays, they are going to provide tokens to the businesses to hand out to customers, so they are still going to have to feed the meter. I figured since it was going to be a generic shot i would get creative and sneak a east coast sunset in the shot.
By the way she and I were then headed to the same spot the yarn store "Mad About Ewes".

Yesterday was the 40th birthday of the comedy group and so we of course did the story to run the day after, today, not the day of, yesterday. Oh well. But this guy edited and contributed to a book "Monty Python and Philosophy", he was really iteresting and I wanted to stick around for the interview 1) to get information for the cut line 2) get ideas for a more interesting portrait and 3) it was going to be interesting!!!! but the new reporter that should remain nameless pretty much kicked me out very rudely (i actually exclaimed "OH!") the man and his wife looked at her like she was crazy, for other reasons as well but that's a longer story. As the wife walked me to the door she gave me a look that was a combination of sorry and don't leave us alone with her.
I should have told her to bug off that I was staying but I was so caught off gaurd that I just left and only had this very typical portrait. The letter at the beginning of the book is from the office of the Queen of England, a response to their letter offering her the opportunity to be a part of their project.

Shooting through the Fence

I really don't like shooting through chain linked fences it messes with my focus at all the wrong times. There match was close and long 9-1130 a.m. I new they would be emotional after the end either way so I was following them to get the shot. (it is one of my new goals to shoot more than just the "action" at sport events). Stupid fence.

Hummm? It is all kinds of not in focus but I wonder how it will reproduce on the blury newspaper?

I didn't have to go far to get my photo of a mom using facebook, just upstairs. The article was on social websites and how some people are eliminating personal contact for the virtual. Amanda, the mom in the photo, wants to make sure that everyone knows she is not addicted and uses the site to stay intouch with friends and to make plans in the real world.

This family portrait is of a newly widowed mother of 7, ages 7,6,5,4,2,1,7mon., they were fun to shoot and I love the fact I didn't need to use a flash, yeah for big windows and sunny days.

All week Danville's has had a festival celebrating the town's history and veterans. This is also the week that Rob is on vacation so I am the only second shift photographer so I got most of the events. Here are a few from the parade.

5 minutes till the rain started luckily they were almost at the end.
The little boy in the yellow is priceless. The reenactor was going after balloons the kid was conserned for his life.

These two were taking their job seriously.

My personal favorite of the crowd and parade. These guys are the United States Army Old Gaurd Fife and Drum Corps, they were impressive.
