Pitching ideas

This week is Catholic School Week in York there was a religion bee...
And cheering school girls...

And what do you know a sports picture without a flash.

Tonight I am shooting my first video, luckily it is of a cat and its owner and I don't have to have it up on the web for a couple weeks so I will have plenty of time to edit it, which is what I am worried about since I have no experience.

I pitched my first story ideas to my editor today, it went very well. I want to go with the local Jewish Community Center to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. in March and do a slide show or a video of the trip and the people. He loved the idea and gave me the go ahead, now I need to contact the JCC to make sure I can come along on the bus and the Holocaust museum to get permission to take photos inside.

The second one is that one of the private elementary schools is having a science night where the kids are sleeping over at the school and doing science late into the night, again he liked the idea and gave me the go ahead so now I actually have projects to work on when I don't have assignments.

Why Flash with Sports?

So my editor wants me to use a flash when i shoot sports, I don't get it and so far haven't. I think it looks unnatural and leaves harsh shadows. He said it will allow me to shoot with a lower ISO and reduce the graininess of the picture, which are being printed in the newspaper and he is worried about graininess of 800ISO. I am going to not use a flash as long as I can so far he has said he likes them.

This is the photo they printed, I don't think it is too grainy.

MLK Day

I was assigned the MLK Day celebrations and community service projects at the Crispus Attucks Association today. It was a grand 'ol time, good people, good food, and good photos. Thankfully only half the time was spent out in the cold.

The first two are YELLOW I don't know what happened and I couldn't get it to look better, I guess I need more practice with photoshop.

I wish I would have done a video for these guys they were great dancers, which doesn't really come across in stills, well in my stills anyway.
These girls were like the minature version of Stomp the Yard. They had attitude and it was dang cute.
So it was cold, with wind chill it felt 7 degrees is what the radio said, some of the kids where out there without coats or gloves, crazy. I was bundled up to the umpth degree.
These last three are my favorite of the day, in no particular order. We were out there for about a hour and a half, the t.v. reporters ditched out after 15 min. whimps.

I need gloves

It is finally cold enough to snow, and I spent a hour waiting for the building to come down without gloves, the things I sacrifice for a picture I don't like. My editor thought it was good, it showed the anticipation of the moment. I think it is blah, doesn't really grab me but oh well.

The only thing less boring than taking a mug of a person is taking a mug of a building but hey it was an easy one just across the street from our offices.

Then I got to the good stuff, the Anstine's Candy shop, it was fabulous and they gave me a sample of their mints, it was divine, I am soooo going back there. It is all owned and operated by the same family for almost 90 years, everything is handmade and they use really pure chocolate so the taste is great but the candy does get a little pricey. I will have to save up.

These are the mints, oh boy my mouth is watering just thinking about them.

The day ended sweetly...

Today was a very slow news day here in the York area, so i was sent out to get an enterprise photo, yeah. I ended up going to a art class that is offered by the local art association, it was acutally pretty fun, everyone there was happy to see me and didn't pay attention to the camera which is nice. here are a couple that my editor liked, I don't know I am still pretty critical on my photos, I guess I should be nice to them since they are my fault.

This one is my favorite, my editor's as well.
He said he was impressed with what I got, almost suprised, I wonder what type of photos the past interns were taking?

I am losing it

So I have lost my drivers license and my passport so i officially don't have any photo id and will be driving very carefully. I am not really worried about having to replace them, and am a little concerned about someone using them to steal my identity but i am really upset about not having the stamps in my passport from all the places I have visited. I guess I can use that as an excuse to travel there again.

So today I only had one assignment and it was a high school swim meet my first. I am regretting not using a flash and bringing my ISO down because they are a little grainy, but I have been assured that I will get another chance. Let me know what you think.

yeah for the FARM SHOW

So I spent a whole day at the farm show in Harrisburg it was fun and here are some locals from York. Yeah for the locals.

This bunny won as well something like best of show but not i didn't really understand, but it was pretty and the owner said that he didn't name it because they are just going to butcher it. That's life. There was also a award winning potato and i have a picture of it and it won't load right but you can see it online at www.yorkdispatch.com/gallery.

First offical crazy day

So today I was given 5 assignment for a "7.5 hours shift". It was a lot longer day here are a couple from the more interesting ones. Don't get too excited they weren't all that interesting.

This was actually the second stop, the lights from the great big tree in the middle of town where being taken down and my editor thought it would be a fun feature picture, doncha think.

From there I raced to the city ice rink to literally take pictures of water freezing, the only people at the energy saving announcement was me and a couple of t.v. reporters.

So this was the last one of the day and I have to say it was pretty fun a bunch of kids taking a Hip Hop class. This one in the middle was taking it very seriously, it was the best a good way to end the very stressful first day.

oh and thanks jarad for the encouragement.

MY WAY COOL OLD HOUSE, well not mine but you know what i mean.

My house that I am staying at, it is about as close to the road as you could get but very cool, built in 1855.Our main source of heat in the house, I am glad that building a fire is in my cash of skills.

The first one....

Fine after much poking and nudging i have a blog for my photos. I am in my third day as an intern at the York Dispatch and my editor sent me on a scavenger hunt where their happened to be no people at the areas, who knew. Here is what i did just remember my first official assignment is on Monday.

This is a really neat flea market, there are 4 or 5 in town that go all year, I am planning to go back and get some goodies next week.

This statue was at the Jewish Community Center, it covers a whole wall, and is very cool but the lighting sucked.

Here come the bears, grrrrrrr!!!!!!!
